A removable denture replaces missing teeth and can be taken in and out of your mouth by you. A full denture replaces all the teeth in one jaw. A partial denture fills the spaces where teeth are missing and is supported by the teeth that remain. A denture can also be supported by implants.
A denture may be considered when missing teeth need to be replaced. Which solution is most suitable — a removable denture, a bridge, or something supported by implants — depends on how many teeth remain, the condition of the jawbone and gums, and what matters to you. This is looked at together.
Impressions or scans of the jaw are taken, after which the denture is made in a dental laboratory. In between, it is tried in and adjusted until the fit and bite are right. You will usually need time to get used to a new denture, both when speaking and when eating.
A denture is cleaned outside the mouth, and the gums underneath still need attention too. The jawbone changes over the years, which can mean that a denture no longer fits as well after a while; it can then be adjusted. The dentist will discuss when a check-up is useful.
